(AP) ? A political tip sheet for the rest of us outside the Washington Beltway, for Thursday, March 1:

WHAT HAPPENED

MICHIGAN UNTIED: A day after a tally showed Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum evenly splitting Michigan's 30 convention delegates, state Republican officials voted to change the distribution and give Romney the edge. Romney now has 16 of the delegates to 14 for Santorum. Most of the delegates were awarded based on the outcome in each of 14 congressional districts. The final two were to be awarded based on the statewide vote, thus one for each candidate. Instead, the state GOP's credentials committee voted Wednesday night to give both of those delegates to Romney. Needless to say, Santorum's camp wasn't happy. It blasted the change as "back-room dealing political thuggery."

PAUL WHACKS ROMNEY: Ron Paul has a new ad running in Washington state that's notable for its attacks on Mitt Romney. The two are friends and, up to this point, the Texas congressman has seemed unwilling to go after the front-runner the same way that rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have. The ad targets all three of Paul's rivals and calls Romney a flip-flopper who has been on all sides of many issues. Romney also is criticized for supporting the federal bailout of the financial industry and providing the blueprint for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

SANTORUM'S SCHOOL FEES: Santorum scorns the government's hand in public education and proudly notes that his seven children were home-schooled. Yet as a senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum got a Pittsburgh-area school district to help pay tens of thousands of dollars in tuition so his children could receive online schooling. His use of tax money to help pay for their education became an issue in the fall of 2004 because his family was primarily living in northern Virginia, outside of Washington. After the matter became public, the Penn Hills School District tried to recover about $73,000 it had argued was wrongly sent to an Internet-based charter school. Pennsylvania's education department later agreed to reimburse the district $55,000 to settle the dispute.

OBAMA'S ENERGY: Obama traveled to snowy New Hampshire to issue another defense of U.S. energy policy under his watch. He told an audience grateful to get out of the cold that charges by Republican presidential candidates that his policies are driving up the price of gas won't pass a "political bull-detector" test. He also reverted to professor mode and used a color-coded chart to instruct the crowd on how the U.S. need for imported oil has been declining. Obama again called on Congress to eliminate about $4 billion in annual tax breaks and subsidies for profitable oil and gas companies. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, scoffed at the idea.

GINGRICH CLAWS BACK. Newt Gingrich is trying to claw his way back into the GOP race and is going after Santorum in a big way. Gingrich said in Georgia, his home state and the place where he hopes his campaign will roar back to life next week, that Santorum is "Pennsylvania big labor baloney." Gingrich's campaign also said it's issuing an anti-Santorum automated phone call to 150,000 households in Oklahoma and Tennessee to highlight the former Pennsylvania senator's ties to organized labor. Both men are vying for strong finishes Tuesday in Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

GINGRICH ROBO-CALL TEXT: "On the campaign trail, Rick Santorum talks a good game about his blue-collar roots, about being for the average family. But here's the record Rick Santorum doesn't want you to know about. As senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum cozied up to the labor bosses and voted for the AFL-CIO and against a national right-to-work bill that would have let workers opt out of paying union dues, union dues that hurt families and small businesses. Rick Santorum: Friend of working families or the union bosses' pal? You decide."

BY THE NUMBERS:

? 4: Number of campaign fundraisers on Obama's schedule Thursday night in New York City.

BY THE DELEGATES:

The latest delegate totals following the change in Michigan:

? Romney, 168.

? Santorum, 86.

? Gingrich, 32.

? Paul, 19.

IN THEIR WORDS:

? "It's one thing to be pro-life, pro-family, pro-marriage, taking on the issues of faith and freedom in this country, core values of life. It's one thing to vote that way, it's another thing to stand up and fight and lead on those issues. I've led." ? Santorum.

? "It's just the same old baloney. One is Massachusetts moderate baloney. The other is Pennsylvania big labor baloney. But they're baloney." ? Gingrich, on his rivals.

? "The president of the United States must protect and defend the Constitution, not ignore it. This is yet another example of what is wrong with Obamacare, and why I am committed to its repeal." ? Romney, on senators who voted to repeal a provision of Obama's health care overhaul.

? "If there's one thing I know about New Hampshire, it's that your political bull-detector is pretty keen. It's pretty sharp." ? Obama.

Truly 'mature' video games needed for aging gamers - Peter Nowak ...

erin m/Flickr

Will there ever be a?Call of Duty: Seniors? Edition? It?s a question I found myself asking after speaking with a CTV reporter the other day.

The reporter was working?on a story?about a recent study that involved?World of Warcraft?and senior citizens. According to the study?s co-author, Jason Allaire at North Carolina State University,? ?People who played ?World of Warcraft? versus those who did not play experienced an increase in cognitive ability, particularly older adults who performed very poorly in our first testing session.? In other words,?World of Warcraft?and video games in general?may be good for older people.

My input to the story came in assessing the future market for video games?a market that looks to expand greatly given that the gaming population is generally getting older. I hadn?t thought much about it before, but it?s indeed a fascinating topic.

The first game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, came out in 1972, but it wasn?t much of a success (the story is thoroughly detailed in?Sex, Bombs and Burgers). Atari released its considerably more successful Pong console in 1975, followed by the 2600 (the first real hit home video game machine) in 1977.

If we make the assumption that the youngest players of those consoles were six or seven years old at the time, that means the oldest people in the world today who have always played video games are in their mid-forties. Put another way, we?re still about 20 years away from having senior citizens who can properly be called gamers.

This means the business is in for a profound change over the next two decades. While some people who played games as children or teenagers may have ?outgrown? them, I suspect that for most people of my generation that?s not the case. We still play video games, but we may not have as much time for them or our tastes have changed. Personally, maybe that?s why I can?t dig a game like?Gears of War 3?like I used to.

There?s something to that. We like to think that we get smarter and wiser as we age, which, if true, means our games will have to do the same. Right now, games that are rated ?M for Mature? generally only get that label because they?re especially violent or they have profane language. Perhaps, in the near future, the ?Mature? rating will instead apply to games that truly cater to older gamers, similar to how this year?s crop of Best Picture Oscar nominees could only possibly appeal to septuagenarians and above.

With that said, exactly what would?Call of Duty: Seniors? Edition?look like?

Clinton defends administration record on Israel

(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is dismissing Republican criticism of President Barack Obama's record in supporting Israel and says U.S. aid would be the highest ever.

Pressed at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Clinton told lawmakers Wednesday that the administration has pledged its strong support for Israel and put more money behind that pledge than any other administration. Obama is seeking $3.1 billion in military assistance for Israel in next year's budget, which would make it the largest recipient of U.S. aid.

Republicans have questioned the administration's budget request for a joint U.S.-Israeli missile defense program, arguing that it's too low. In fact, the amount is close to the current level.

The election-year criticism comes ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington next week.

Adele's 21 Scores 22nd Week At #1

Fun. debut at #3, while Tyga lands at #4 with Careless World.

Surely someone is going to come along to knock Adele off her perch. But in the meantime, the Grammy-winning singer simply cannot be beat, as her 21 will notch its 22nd non-consecutive week at #1 next week thanks to sales of nearly 297,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

And that's with sales dropping almost 60 percent from her post-Grammy high. More than a year into her incredible run, Adele has sold almost 7.7 million copies of her second album in the U.S. Also holding strong was the Whitney Houston greatest-hits collection, which lost just 1 percent of its sales from the previous week, staying in the #2 position on sales of 174,000 in the second full chart week since the singer's death. It was joined in the top 10 by the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard," (#6, 47,000, up 176 percent) and her self-titled debut (#9, 30,000, up 72 percent).

Among the debuts in the top 10 are: Fun., Some Nights (#3, 70,000); Tyga, Careless World: Rise of the Last King (#4, 61,000); and Chiddy Bang, Breakfast (#8, 31,000).

The rest of the top 10: Now That's What I Call Music! 41 (#5, 54,000); Adele's debut, 19 (#7, 39,000); and the 2012 Grammy Nominees compilation (#10, 29,000).

Just outside the top tier, buzz duo Sleigh Bells rolled into a #12 debut with their second album, Reign of Terror and Grimes hit #98 with Visions (5,000).

Over on the iTunes singles chart, Fun.'s hookup with Janelle Monae, "We Are Young," was at #1, followed by Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)," The Wanted with "Glad You Came," Katy Perry's "Part of Me" and B.o.B's "So Good." The list was rounded out by Adele at #6 with "Set Fire to the Rain," Nicki Minaj just behind with "Starships," then Gotye with "Somebody That I Used to Know," Chris Brown with "Turn Up the Music" and Carrie Underwood's "Good Girl."

Adele easily kept the #1 spot on the iTunes album chart, followed by Tyga, Fun., Chiddy Bang, Houston, Sleigh Bells, Gotye's Making Mirrors, Adele's 19, Drake's Take Care and the Beatles' 1.

Adele should be safe for another week as she pursues the magic 24-weeks-at-#1 mark, though the new album from Bruce Springsteen could provide a challenge. Otherwise, the fresh faces include Sean Paul, Estelle and Kid Cudi's troubled WZRD project.
