The better news, is that the $25 Model A version has gotten an upgrade from the planned 128Mb of RAM to 256Mb matching the Model B, which still throws in an extra USB port and an Ethernet hookup for $10 more. Unfortunately there is some bad news as well, while the Model A is going into production "immediately", cheapskates will have to hold off a little, as the Model B is the only one on sale right now. Built on a Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM11 processor, they're intended as a cheap computing option that require only a keyboard and RCA or HDMI-connected display to give a full desktop experience including gaming and HD video playback . The team also announced it has secured manufacturing and distribution agreements that should guarantee a steady supply, without the previous limitation of 10,000 at a time batches. According to ABC's preliminary ratings, the Billy Crystal-hosted awards show had a 25.5 rating and 37 share, a 4 percent increase over the 2011 show, which famously bombed thanks to the lack of chemistry between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Crystal's safe-as-milk ninth go-round as host earned the veteran comedian mostly tepid to negative reviews, but it was enough to boost the big night to one of its best ratings nights since 2007, when the show put up a 27.7 rating and 42 share.

The highest-ever Oscar ratings came in 1998, when the global blockbuster "Titanic" helped draw in more than 55 million viewers.

Ratings might have been even higher if any of the most-nominated movies had posted solid box-office figures as well. But between them, the leading winners, "The Artist" and "Hugo," which both reveled in a nostalgic look back at the dawn of the modern movie era, have grossed just over $100 million combined to date. To put that in perspective, popcorn flick "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which was blanked in three technical categories, brought in nearly that much in its opening weekend.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A two-point gain was enough to push the Standard & Poor's 500 index to its highest level since June 2008, three months before the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the darkest days of the financial crisis.

The S&P 500 index closed at 1,365.74, beating its 2011 closing high by two points.

For the second day this week, the Dow Jones industrial average nudged above 13,000 then pulled back. It rose 29 points in the morning but wavered in the afternoon. The Dow dropped 1.74 points to close at 12,982.95. American Express was the leading stock among the 30 that make up the average, gaining 1.2 percent.

It was a similar story on Tuesday, when the Dow flitted above 13,000 three times but ended the day lower. The average hasn't closed above 13,000 since May 19, 2008.

What will it take for the Dow to close above 13,000 and stay there? Mark Lamkin, CEO of Lamkin Wealth Management in Louisville, Ky., said it would require a surprising news event, like a huge merger or an economic report that blows past expectations.

"It needs some type of surprise, a bombshell," Lamkin said. "We've had a pretty good run over the past four months. Now it's going to take something great to keep it above 13,000."

The two economic reports out Friday didn't make the cut.

A consumer sentiment index taken by the University of Michigan and Reuters edged up in February to its highest level in a year. And the Commerce Department reported that sales of new homes dipped slightly in January, but the figure still topped economists' estimates. It also said sales in the final three months of 2011 were higher than previously reported.

"The numbers are just OK," Lamkin said. "They weren't bad, but they weren't great, either."

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite index rose 6.77 points to 2,963.75.

Oil prices hit a nine-month high of $109.77 a barrel. The price of oil has jumped 10 percent this month amid rising concerns about a conflict with Iran.

The euro added a penny against the dollar, hitting $1.346, its highest since Dec. 5. Greece made a formal offer to creditors to swap their Greek government bonds for new ones, another step toward knocking $142 billion off its debts. The swap is part of a deal to prevent Greece from defaulting on a debt payment due next month.

Stock indexes have been climbing since November as European officials redoubled their efforts to contain the region's debt crisis and the European Central Bank extended cheap loans to troubled banks. The S&P 500 index has gained 8.6 percent to start 2012, better than its long-term annual average gain.

In contrast to the volatile trading of late last year, the market's gains have been small but steady. To Lamkin, the lack of large swings looks ominous. The world is still full of dangers, he said. Lamkin tells his clients that the top risks are another flare-up in the European debt crisis and a war between Israel and Iran.

"When the next big thing happens, and it will, you're going to see a pullback," he said. "I think we're due."

Among stocks making big moves:

? Sprint Nextel Corp. lost 2 percent. The country's largest cable company, Comcast, filed a suit against Sprint Nextel, alleging that it was violating Comcast's patents.

? Gap fell 4 percent. The clothing retailer reported a 40 percent plunge in quarterly profit after the market closed Thursday. Gap said higher costs and deep discounts weighed on its revenue.

? Deckers Outdoor Corp. sank 14 percent after the maker of Ugg boots and Teva footwear said higher costs will lead to lower profits for the quarter and full year.

? Kenneth Cole Production Inc. soared 18 percent to $15.49 on news that Kenneth Cole is offering to buy the rest of the company. Cole currently holds about 47 percent of the company and has offered would give stockholders $15 per share, a 15 percent premium to the company's Thursday closing price.

In the Berkshires, The Trustees of Reservations own and steward a series of five historic homes, which, together, cover periods in history ranging from the early settlement of the Berkshires by the British in the 18^th century to the years of political tension and war of the mid-20^th century. We strive to use these sites to educate, tell stories, provide places of beauty and relaxation, provide opportunities to reflect on the past and let it challenge our present assumptions, and to show the public how they can become a part of preserving their own stories and the history of the communities in which they live.

Job Summary

The Historic Homes Educator will present educational programming at Naumkeag, Mission House, and Ashley House.

• Naumkeag (Stockbridge), summer home of the Choate family built in 1885 by McKim, Mead, and White and featuring seven gardens created by Mabel Choate and landscape designer Fletcher Steele
• ?Mission House (Stockbridge), built in c. 1743 as a home for John Sergeant, missionary to the Mohican people of the Berkshires
• Ashley House (Sheffield), built inc. 1734 ?and home to Col. John Ashley, patriot and co-writer of the Sheffield Resolves, and enslaved woman Elizabeth ?Mumbett? Freeman who sued for her freedom from the Ashley family and won

The Historic Homes Educator will have the opportunity to lead school field trip programs; design workshops, events, and educational activities; provide specialty tours; and work with us to enhance self-guided educational experiences at the site. In addition, the Educator may be asked to lend support to special events and other programming when needed.

This position is perfect for someone who has an interest in local history, is excited to engage people with historic sites, is comfortable designing fun and educational activities, and enjoys working outdoors.

The Historic Homes Educator reports to the Cultural Site Administrator and works closely with the Regional Engagement Manager. The Educator will also work closely on joint programming with the Conservation Ranger at Bartholomew?s Cobble, which abuts the Ashley House.

This position is 20 hour per week, May through August, and pays $11-13hr. ?Weekends and some holiday work are required.

Specific Responsibilities

• Lead spring programming for school groups visiting Ashley House jointly with the Conservation Ranger at Bartholomew?s Cobble

• Develop public workshops and events at Ashley House, Mission House, Naumkeag for visitors during the spring and summer

• Provide interpretation for specialty groups visiting the Ashley House and Mission House

• Lead special children?s activities for young visitors to Naumkeag

• Play a supporting role for large public events at the sites as needed (e.g. Mumbett Day, Berkshires Community Day)

• Act as an ambassador for The Trustees (along with other staff and volunteers) at community events and other outreach opportunities as needed

• With staff team, maintain and update self-guided visitor activities for sites

A hearty bean and squash stew that will last throughout the week.

Every Sunday I usually like to make a big pot of beans or soup for us to have for lunches during at least the first half of the week. It makes meals infinitely easier, and allows me to not have to think about what I?m going to eat while I?m in the middle of work. Because I do this fairly consistently, I do like to try new recipes and mix things up a bit.

Winter Squash and Bean Stew
This recipe is taken from the Hubbard Squash and Pinto Bean Stew found on MyRecipes.com

Note: One nice thing about this recipe is that it does not require the use of a slow-cooker if you do not have one, although I am sure this would also cook nicely in one.

3 cups dried pinto beans
4 cups water
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 medium-sized onions, chopped
4 cups (1/2-inch) cubed peeled hubbard squash or fresh pumpkin
1 cup peeled and sliced carrot, about two medium-sized carrots
1 tablespoon chipotle chile in adobo sauce, chopped (for a gluten-free recipe, you can substitute about 1 teaspoon chipotle pepper powder)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh or 2 teaspoons dried sage
1 tablespoon chopped fresh or 1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes, undrained
3/4 teaspoon? salt
2 tablespoons pumpkin-seed kernels, toasted (optional)

Sort and wash pinto beans. Check out my post on how to cook dry beans to learn how to sort and wash beans, although you do not need to follow the remaining steps for this stew recipe.

Place the beans in a large pot, and cover with water to about two inches above the beans. Boil them for two minutes, turn off the heat and then allow them to sit for about two hours.

Drain and rinse the pinto beans, then combine them and four cups of water in a large pan, then bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes. Cover and simmer an additional 30 minutes or until tender.

Meanwhile, prep your squash, carrots and onions. Take care while chopping your squash ? refer to my post on hubbard squash risotto to see how I recommend cutting open the squash as well as chopping the actual squash meat.

Cut up about two chipotle peppers from your can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.

Important: If you are following a gluten-free diet, I discovered that this can of chipotle peppers is not gluten-free. It contains flour, likely to thicken the sauce. Southern Virginia has many large, beautiful, old homes. ?They overlook our streets and rural routes, and some are open to us to enjoy, either as part of a historical tour or as a bed and breakfast.

The Grey Swan Inn is one such home.

The home was built in 1902 and was the home of Douglas Longstreet Tuggle, a tobacco merchant, and his family. ?It stayed in the family until 1980?s. ?It then was transformed by renovations, and has five guest rooms; four are on the second story and a third suite is on the third floor. ?The parlor and living room are off the main foyer and are made cozy with heirlooms and other antiques brought in by Christine and Jim Hasbrouck. ?The Hasbrouk came from Baltimore and bought the home, ?reopening it 2007.

What made you want to run a bed and breakfast?

We?ve been staying at b&b?s for years. When Jim was transferred to a position in Washington, DC, we felt that this would be a good time to start thinking about his retirement from the USDA Forest Service. ?What if we could run a b&b? that was a seed planted by staying at inns over the years which developed into, let?s check it out. We started sharing our dream with our friends who were very encouraging. So we started seeing what properties were on the market, talking to innkeepers about the business while staying at the inns, and taking a one day course. After that course we knew that?s what we wanted to do and we started in earnest to pursue our vision.?We met with Peter Scherman, of The B&B Team one weekend and signed up to take his firm?s Aspiring Innkeeper?s course ? Once we had our vision clearly outlined on paper it became easier. ?We knew we wanted an inn with 4-5 guest rooms, to be located in a college town if possible, a turn-key operation, and within driving distance to my family in West Virginia.

Why did you decide on this house in Blackstone, Virginia?

We found this inn on the internet. ?We had looked at a lot of different properties and none were ?just? right. Jim came down one Saturday to look at the Grey Swan.. driving into town he knew that I would like Blackstone. Then he met with the realtors who showed him the house and he knew that this was ?the place.? ?I came down the following week and agreed with him. While we were in Blackstone, we visited a couple of businesses to get the feel for the community?. we were greeted by warm and interested people. I was even hugged by a gal at one shop when I told her we were interested in coming to Blackstone ? that cinched the deal as far as I was concerned.

It was a perfect size for all our heirlooms. ?I?m still investigating the details of some of Jim?s items. ?I?m going through his grandmother?s diaries, so secretes will be revealed!

What are some memorable moments?

The children visiting our inn have surprised me?1. We had one family visiting for a Blue/Grey Ball ? their 3 daughters, all home schooled, had made their gowns in the period of the mid 1800?s? It was wonderful seeing them come down the stairs in the gowns before going to the ball ? beautiful!!! And they even entertained us with their musical talents.

?Another child left us the nicest note and drawing of our dog. She and her parents bought us a small swan dish to add to our collection. The review she left us is priceless and we have put it on our website for others to read.

A third child made us a swan origami ? added that to our collection!

What have you gotten out of running an inn?

We attract the nicest guests ? listening to their discussions around the dining room table while we are serving breakfast is refreshing. We occasionally get to join them over coffee after breakfast is served or in the evenings in the parlor or on the front porch. Finding our common connections is easy and hopefully they leave the inn feeling they have gained a friendship with us. We certainly feel that we have been blessed by their presence here.

'DNA robot' targets cancer cells

Scientists have developed and tested a "DNA robot" that delivers payloads such as drug molecules to specific cells.

The container was made using a method called DNA origami, in which long DNA chains are folded in a prescribed way.

Then, so-called aptamers - which can recognise specific cell types - were used to lock the barrel-shaped robot.

In lab tests described in Science, the locks opened on contact with cancer cell proteins, releasing antibodies that halted the cells' growth.

The method could find wide use in biological applications, where this kind of "specificity" is highly prized.

Lead author of the research, Shawn Douglas of the Wyss Institute at Harvard University, said the result brings together several recent research strands.

"We've been working on figuring out how to build different shapes using DNA over the past several years, and other researchers have used antibodies as therapeutics, in order to manipulate cell signalling, and yet others have demonstrated that aptamers can be used to target cancer cell types," Dr Douglas told BBC News.

"The novel part is really integrating all those different pieces and putting them together in a single device that works."

In essence, the approach co-opts a number of strategies of our immune systems, with the robots playing the role of white blood cells that hunt down problematic cells and destroy them.

The team tested the robots using several cultures of cancer cells including lymphoma and leukemia, with corresponding payloads of antibodies.

Because DNA is found in nearly all of our cells, Dr Douglas said the robots posed fewer problems of toxicity than many materials would have.

Scientists have already discovered a large number of different aptamers that can "recognise" proteins corresponding to different diseases, so the approach could in principle be adapted to a wide range of applications.

Dr Douglas said that there was still much optimisation to be done on the robots; for now the team will create a great many of them to be tested in an animal model.
