The mother of a month-old baby was murdered and dumped in a canal on Christmas Day as her family waited for her to come home and open her presents.

Ruby Love?s body was spotted floating in the Grand Union Canal in Southall, West London, on Sunday morning.

Police believe the 23-year-old was thrown into the water just hours earlier, after being hit on the back of the head and strangled.

Miss Love, who also had a two-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter, was last seen at 6pm on Christmas Eve before going out for the evening.

?

She had been expected to return home on Christmas Day to open presents with her children and her mother and sister, with whom she lived in Harrow, North London.

Last night police charged Miss Love?s boyfriend of five years with her murder. Manzar Juma, 27, is due to appear before Brent Magistrates Court later today.

Miss Love?s distraught mother Precious said: ?She was just the most lovely girl, the best daughter I could have asked for.

?We were having our Christmas dinner and opening our presents as we were waiting for her. I waited and waited and I texted her through the night.

Sealed off: Investigators were still at the scene where Miss Love was found

?I waited until it had got to 24 hours after [she left] and then I gave it one more hour, and then there was a knock on the door. It was the police.

?It?s such a loss ? I do not know how we are going to cope.?

The 45-year-old identified her daughter?s body on Boxing Day. She said she appeared to have been hit on the back of? her head, and that the body bore strang- ulation marks.

An initial post-mortem examination was unable to establish a formal cause of death.

Yesterday Miss Love?s sister Sarah, 22, fought back tears as she described her devotion to her children.

?She loved her kids but she was a mother to everyone,? she said. ?She always protected me and I could not protect her. She was an angel. We have just not stopped crying.?I still cannot believe this.?

As a tribute, her mother has painted a white cross on Miss Love?s front door under the words: ?Ruby?s Angel House.? The Hindu-Sikh family had converted to Christianity and changed their surname from Malik. Miss Love worked in their property business.

Yesterday police divers were still searching the section of the canal where her body was found. The area forms part of the popular Hillingdon Trail walk.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ?Police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a body in the Grand Union Canal.

?Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed anything suspicious on, or before Christmas Day.?

He added that officers ?are aware of? previous incidents which will form part of our investigation?.

? An Indian student ?executed? on Boxing Day may have been the victim of a racially-motivated attack, police said yesterday.

Anuj Bidve, 23, was shot in the side of the head as he walked with friends in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Five people ? including a boy of 16 and two aged 17 ? have been arrested by police on suspicion of murder.

Mr Bidve?s father Subhash, speaking from the family?s home in Pune, Maharashtra, said he learned of his son?s death via a message posted on Facebook.

? A mother was stabbed to death after an apparent domestic dispute.
A man believed to be the 36-year-old?s partner was yesterday fighting for his life in hospital after he was discovered unconscious at their flat.

Neighbours said the victim?s schoolboy son raised the alarm after stumbling out of the family property in Wolverhampton ?covered in blood?.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

US teen killed in Mexico heading to see girlfriend (AP)

MORELIA, Mexico ? An American teenager who was found dead on Christmas Eve in Mexico had gone to see his girlfriend the day he died and didn't tell relatives, perhaps fearing they wouldn't let him go, according to Mexican prosecutors' documents obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

The charred remains of 18-year-old Alexis Uriel Marron of Rolling Meadows, Illinois were found along with the bodies of two friends in the trunk of a burned-out car in the western state of Michoacan. The car belonged to one of the friends.

Two uncles identified Marron through crowns on his teeth and clothing that hadn't burned, the documents said.

The prosecutors' office said the car holding the remains of the three young men was found Saturday on the side of a rural road in Michoacan, a Mexican state that has been plagued in recent years by violence linked to Mexico's drug trafficking trade.

Prosecutors were looking into robbery as a possible motive because none of the three men's possessions were found in the car. But the area has also been the scene of bloody turf battles between drug gangs. The Knights Templar and Jalisco New Generation cartels are believed to be active in the area.

Marron was a U.S. citizen, according to the documents, but his family was from a town in the area called Quiringuicharo. The relatives said Marron, a suburban Chicago high school student, arrived in Mexico on Dec. 3 to celebrate the year-end holidays and was staying with an uncle.

He left the house on Dec. 23, wearing a blue checked shirt, with the intention of visiting his girlfriend, who lived in the neighboring state of Jalisco. Another uncle said he called Marron Friday afternoon to tell him to collect money his father had sent him from the U.S.

Marron replied that he was on the road, and the signal was bad, according to the documents.

When he hadn't returned later in the evening, the family began to worry.

"I thought that he had gone without telling us for fear that we wouldn't give him permission," Jose Avalos Reyes, one of the uncles, told prosecutors.

The cousin of one of the other victims said he called Marron's girlfriend. She told him she had been expecting him and his friends but they had never arrived.

Family members reported the disappearances to local authorities and the charred remains were discovered the next day. The uncles told prosecutors that Marron did not do drugs.

Word of the death spread quickly to the Chicago area, which has a large population of Mexicans and Mexican Americans with roots in Michoacan. Family members were shocked, calling him a good kid.

Friends set up two memorial Facebook pages, a YouTube picture tribute and held a memorial Tuesday evening. Dozens attended in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect. They carried candles, flowers and balloons. Some quietly prayed in Spanish.

He was remembered as an athlete, a positive person who was always smiling and loved spending time with family.

Marron's cousin, Daniela Zendejas, told reporters that she considered him to be a brother. "He loved his nieces. And he didn't have time to get to one of them, to see her grow," she told reporters. "And now he's gone."

Another memorial was planned for next week when students were scheduled to return after the holiday break to Rolling Meadows High School, where Marron was a student. They were urged to wear red, Marron's favorite color.

"Wear red to remember our friend ... RIP Alexis Marron," one of the Facebook tributes read. "We are also all meeting out by his locker in the morning, bring pictures if you'd like or post notes or anything you'd like on his locker. We will all come together in remembrance..."

The U.S. State Department said the agency was working with U.S. Embassy officials to get more information. Mexican Consulate officials in Chicago said they were aware of reports of Marron's death and were ready to help family if requested.

The other two victims were identified as Mexican men aged 21 and 24. All three were from, or had family in Quiringuicharo.

Earlier in December, two other bodies were found in a burned-out vehicle on the same stretch of road. The victims have been identified as two Mexico City residents, but there was no immediate information on the motive in those killings either.

Texas police: Man in Santa suit killed 6 relatives

Click photo to enlarge

Two young girls walk by police tape that stretches through a Grapevine, Texas, apartment complex where police found seven people dead in an apartment on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 in Grapevine, Texas. Four women and three men who police believe to be related were found apparently shot to death, and authorities said they believe the shooter is among the dead.

GRAPEVINE, Texas?Police in a quiet Fort Worth suburb worked Monday to piece together a family history after a man dressed in a Santa Claus suit apparently shot six relatives and himself on Christmas.

Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling said the shooter showed up in the costume shortly before gunfire erupted and that the family appeared to have been opening Christmas presents. Police responding to a 911 call found four females and three males dead. They also found two handguns.

"We think he was just inside there celebrating Christmas with the rest of them and decided for whatever reason that's how he's going to end things," Eberling told The Associated Press.

Investigators worked through Sunday night and into Monday morning, meticulously searching the apartment where the bodies were found, along with vehicles parked outside. Police said they believe the victims were related, though some were visiting and didn't live in the apartment.

Eberling said investigators were assembling a "family history," and that the apartment was leased to a woman and her two children, one age 15 and the other either 19 or 20. He would not give other specifics.

"We're getting a clearer picture, but we're not ready to go on the record with anything until we find out from the medical examiner absolute confirmation of identities and the manner of death," Eberling said.

Autopsies of the shooter and the victims were being done Monday by the Tarrant County medical examiner, but it would probably be Tuesday before their identities were released, he said.

Roger Metcalf, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office, said the victims have been tentatively identified, but the office couldn't confirm the names because the state driver's license fingerprint database wasn't available on the holiday.

"In addition, we need to locate next of kin before information can be released, and our investigators are working on that as well," Metcalf wrote in an email to the AP.

Late Sunday evening, police intently searched a sport utility vehicle parked outside the apartment. The vehicle is registered to a man who listed his residence as a home two miles away in the neighboring suburb of Colleyville.

Thomas Ehrlich, who lives near the home in Colleyville, told the AP he heard from neighbors that police went to the house Sunday. He said he believed the man and woman who once lived there were estranged.

Records show the couple had financial problems and that their home, most recently valued on the county tax rolls at $336,200, had been sold in 2010 at a foreclosure auction?although it appeared the man was still living there.

"I actually saw him out doing yard work just last weekend," Ehrlich said.

Spa manager Leah Langford said she became concerned when the man's wife didn't show up for work Monday at the business where she had been employed for four years. Langford said she got no response when she called the woman's cell phone, nor could she learn anything when she went to the Colleyville home and the Grapevine apartment.

"For somebody who's always early to work and who never misses a day of work, we expected the worst," Langford said.

The shootings Sunday were the first homicides in Grapevine in more than a year and a half.

Police and firefighters rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex about 11:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call in which no one was on the other end of the line. Because no one responded on the phone, police went into the apartment, located at the back of the complex. They found the seven, aged 15 to 60, dead.

Many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? In the chaos after the Christmas terror attack on a Catholic church, one mortally wounded man cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa Catholic Church and dozens were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million have staged Christmas attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

On Monday, tried to clean the sanctuary of the damaged church, while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris. Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

"In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

"Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams -researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology -- which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people -- to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology - which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications - over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

SECTOR IN FOCUS

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD NEW RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering

by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

Guerry Clegg commentary: Mark Richt, Gene Chizik, Nick Saban among sports figures in my Christmas gift return line

Ughhh, look at that return line. Must be a thousand feet long. Happens every year. The day after Christmas, and everybody wants to return something. Oh, well, let?s just get this started.

All right, listen up everybody. Refunds and exchanges only. Have your receipt ready and when you reach the counter, state your name, position and reason for return or refund. Got it? OK, who?s first?

?Rick Sund, Atlanta Hawks general manager. I wanna return this.?

What is it? It must weigh three tons.

?It?s Joe Johnson?s contract. It?s got six good years left on it.?

Why are you returning it?

?Just wasn?t what we had in mind. I mean, he?s a great shooter and all. But ??

But what?

?But now we can?t afford any more players to try to win an NBA title.?

Too bad. You should have thought about that before you signed him to that seven-year contract for 68 gazillion dollars. Sorry. I can?t take it back. There?s no resale market for it. Now, please. Step aside.

Next!

?Fredi Gonzalez, Atlanta Braves manager.?

What ya got there, Fredi?

?September.?

September? Like, the whole month.

?Yes. I want to exchange it.?

For what?

?Anything.?

We can?t take back a whole month.?

?Fine. How about just one game??

Any game in particular?

?Yeah, that extra-inning loss to the Cardinals. Just give us that game, which would give the Cardinals another loss, and WE?RE in the playoffs, not St. Louis, and I?M sitting on top of the sunroof of a Caddy rolling down Peachtree Street and celebrating a World Series victory, not Tony LaRussa.?

Sorry, can?t help you. If I gave returns on September collapses, it would change all of baseball history. The Cubs and their black cat jinks, the great Phillies fall of ?64. Besides, your season didn?t just fall apart. Your abuse of your bullpen contributed. Maybe your bullpen wouldn?t have blown that two-run lead if it had been more rested. Then there was your decision to sit Jose Constanza when he was hot because you didn?t want to offend Jason Hayward and your decision to keep running Derek Lowe out there every fifth day. Sorry, the warranty does not cover user misuse.

Neeext!

?Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons coach. I ? uh ? this is a little embarrassing. I need to whisper.?

Sure, go ahead.

?I want to take back that decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 in overtime against New Orleans. That might have cost us the game.?

Oh, you mean the one you adamantly defended as the right decision. Nice to see you finally admit it. You have your receipt?

?Yeah, right here.?

The NFC South standings?

?Yeah. It cost us a share of first place.?

I see. Well, a refund is out of the question. But tell you what. Beat the Saints tonight in New Orleans, then run the table in the NFC playoffs and you?re in the Super Bowl. Green Bay did it last year. Pittsburgh and New England have done it. That first-round bye is way overrated anyway. Go to the Super Bowl and nobody will remember fourth-and-dumb. Sorry. It?s the best I can offer.

Neeeeeext!

?Nick Saban, Alabama football coach.?

Nick, you?ve already been given a straight exchange on that LSU game. What now?

?Yeah, I just stopped by to say thanks.?

Oh, yeah? Could the fact that our holiday helper in the stock room is 6-foot-5 and can bench press Bryant-Denny Stadium -- and can almost lift the NCAA Manual -- have anything to do with you stopping by?

?No. It?s the recruiting dead period. We can?t talk to recruits. But you know ? (voice raising) ALABAMA IS A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY FOOTBALL, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO PLAY IN THE NFL. AND WE NEED ANOTHER OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. I HAVE SIX SCHOLARSHIPS LEFT, SO I CAN SIGN 17 MORE PLAYERS.?

Neeeeeeeext!

?Mark Richt, Georgia football coach.?

What do you have there?

?My 2012 season schedule. I?m told I have to add Missouri, so I want to return Alabama.?

Actually, we?re working on that. But I can?t guarantee that you won?t have to play Bama in the SEC Championship Game.

?Do you have anything else that?s not crimson? I kinda like maroon. Navy and red look nice.?

As in Mississippi State or Ole Miss? Bet you would like that. Sorry, not happening. We do have this nice purple and gold ?

?NOOOO! (sigh) I?m still having purple nightmares. Fine, I?ll take the crimson. At least they don?t have a Honey Badger.?

OK, neeeeeeext!

?Gene Chizik, Auburn football coach. Is this Lost and Found??

No, it?s the return and exchange line. Why, what did you lose?

?What DIDN?T I lose? I?ve lost my offense, my offensive coordinator, my defensive coordinator, my Top 25 ranking. Now Nick Saban has taken my place in the BCS Championship Game.?

Didn?t you take HIS place last year? He said that rightfully belonged to him.

?That?s what 70 percent of Alabamians think.?

Neeeeeeeext! Folks, I just have enough space to help this one last gentleman.

?That?s OK, we?re all together.?

Together? There must be a thousand people left in line. You?re all here for the same thing.

?Yeah. We?re skeptics, and we?re returning our doubt.?

Doubt about whom?

?Tim Tebow.?

You know he threw four picks Saturday, don?t you? ? Hey, where?s everybody going?

?We changed our minds.?

Former Atletico hero Diego Simeone is their new coach

Diego Simeone is the new coach of the Spanish Primera Liga side Atletico Madrid, the club announced.

Simeone replaces Gregorio Manzano, who was sacked Thursday following his side's defeat to Albacete in the Spanish Copa del Rey and a poor start to the season that has left the club just four points above the relegation zone.

Simeone becomes the 49th coach at Atletico since Miguel Angel's father, Jesus Gil, took control of the club in 1987.

The 41-year-old was a hero of the Atletico Madrid side that won a league and cup double in the 1995-96 season before leaving to play in Italy, where he played for Inter Milan and Lazio.

He returned for another year at Atletico late in his career in 2003, but again left the club to end his playing career.

Moving into coaching after hanging up his boots, Simeone worked with Racing Club de Santander, before working with River Plate, Estudiantes, San Lorenzo and with Italian side Catania, and then finally returning to Racing, who he abandoned at the end of last week.

Pope laments Christmas consumerism, glitter (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI decried the increasing commercialization of Christmas as he celebrated Christmas Eve Mass on Saturday night, urging the faithful to look beyond the holiday's "superficial glitter" to discover its true meaning.

Benedict presided over the service in a packed St. Peter's Basilica, kicking off an intense two weeks of Christmas-related public appearances that will test the 84-year-old pontiff's stamina amid signs that fatigue is starting to slow him down.

The Christmas Eve Mass was moved up to 10 p.m. from midnight several years ago to spare the pope a late night that is followed by an important Christmas Day speech. In a new concession this year, Benedict processed down the basilica's central aisle on a moving platform to spare him the long walk.

Benedict appeared to hold up well during the Mass despite the late hour and a dry cough that interrupted his homily.

In his homily, Benedict lamented that Christmas has become an increasingly commercial celebration that obscures the simplicity of the message of Christ's birth.

"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light," he said.

It was the second time in as many days that Benedict has pointed to the need to rediscover faith to confront the problems facing the world today. In his end-of-year meeting with Vatican officials on Thursday, Benedict said Europe's financial crisis was largely "based on the ethical crisis looming over the Old Continent."

Benedict officially kicked off Christmas a few hours before the evening Mass, lighting a candle in his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square in a sign of peace, as crowds gathered to witness the unveiling of the Vatican's larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

Security was tight for the evening Mass, as it has been in recent years. There was no word of any repeat of the 2008 and 2009 Christmas Eve security breaches, in which a woman with a history of psychiatric problems and wearing a telltale red sweat shirt jumped the wooden security barrier along the basilica's central aisle and lunged for the pope.

In 2008, the pope's security detail blocked her from getting to Benedict. But in 2009, she managed to grab Benedict's vestments and pulled him to the ground. The pope was unhurt and continued along with the service, but a French cardinal who was nearby fell and broke his hip.

On Sunday, Benedict will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world," from the central loggia of St. Peter's overlooking the piazza. Usually, the speech is a survey of sorts of the hardships and wars confronting humanity. He's also due to deliver Christmas greetings in dozens of languages.

Next weekend, he'll preside over a New Year's Eve vespers service, followed by a New Year's Day Mass. A few days later he'll celebrate Epiphany Mass followed by his traditional baptizing of babies in the Vatican's frescoed Sistine Chapel.

Michael Lohan on Possible Kate Major Love Child: I Heard About That ...

Michael Lohan is weighing in for the first time on Kate Major's possible pregnancy in a new interview ... apparently these two nut jobs only communicate via Dr. Drew.

MiLo says he's heard about it, but not much more than we have.

"I've heard about it ... When she left her dads house, she left some medication and her pills there and she was off the pill for like 4-5 days and of course we had sex."

"So there was a chance ... from what I understand now, she says she's pregnant or she could be. Evidently she is taking the test so she thinks she might be."

Riveting insight right there.

Michael Lohan and Dr. Drew

Asked about how he would react if Kate Major were pregnant, given that neither of them believe in abortion as a possibility, Mike told Dr. Drew the following:

"I would never, never, never want to let a child grow up without a father and a mother, so if she was pregnant, it would be something that she has to consider."

"Does she want to raise a baby on her own? I don't think so."

Michael Lohan added that his relationship with his children with Dina Lohan would improve as they get older and would not be affected adversely by this.

He also said that he has not seen any Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures, nor will he be checking those out for obvious reasons, but he supports the career move.

Report: Military hospitals not adequately checking doc credentials

By Charley Keyes, CNN

updated 5:34 PM EST, Fri December 23, 2011

Congress and the military have examined how Maj. Nidal Hasan was trained, evaluated and promoted as a military physician.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Congress called for the General Accountability Office report after the Fort Hood shootings
  • The report urges the Defense Department to speed efforts to revise the review process
  • The military says its centralized system will be delayed without adequate funding

Washington (CNN) -- A federal watchdog took a bite out of military hospitals this month, warning it is impossible to tell if some doctors are licensed, properly trained and evaluated in their specialties.

"Army oversight and physician credentialing and privileging requirements were not sufficient to assure that MTFs (Medical Treatment Facilities) fully complied with existing requirements or completely documented information needed to support credentialing and privileging decisions," said the new General Accountability Office report.

"Specifically, Army Medical Command's oversight of individual MTFs' reviews of physicians' applications for privileges was insufficient to identify the instances of noncompliance and incomplete documentation," the report added.

In some cases the military had failed to check properly on the legitimacy of doctors' licenses to practice medicine, the report alleged.

"Some credentials files we reviewed lacked complete documentation to show that MTFs had primary source verified all of the physician's state medical licenses, including seven instances involving a physician's only active medical license," the report says.

Primary source verification of credentials means they are verified with a specific credential's source.

Congress called for the report in the aftermath of the Fort Hood, Texas, shooting in November 2009, for which an Army psychiatrist is charged with 13 murders.

Congress and the military have examined how Maj. Nidal Hasan was trained, evaluated and promoted as a military physician. Nine military officials, including doctors, were disciplined for their actions or failures in the Hasan case. He faces a court-martial, with a possible death penalty, in March.

The GAO report cast a wider net and urged the Defense Department to speed up its efforts to revise and standardize reviews of doctors' credentials. And it singles out the Army for problems at its facilities.

"Based on our review of 150 credentials files at the five Army MTFs we selected for our review, we found that none of the five Army MTFs fully complied with certain Army physician credentialing and privileging requirements," the GAO report said. "Specifically, we found that the selected MTFs did not fully comply with the Army's requirement to primary source verify all state medical licenses at the time of privileging and at renewal."

In a response included in the report, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. Jonathan Woodson wrote the department is progressing with standardization and centralization of credential files and improving how doctors can apply for and renew privileges to practice at military hospitals. But the military warned that its centralized system would be delayed "without adequate funding."

The report cited over-reliance of so-called peer reviews, especially in cases where coworkers might have only a limited familiarity with a doctor.

"In one file we reviewed, both peer recommendations were from individuals who indicated they had limited knowledge of the physician's clinical competence," the report says. "The department chief later told us that this physician was terminated within the first three months due to issues with the physician's competence and professionalism."

In another instance, a doctor had problems with errors in prescriptions, above what the hospital allowed. However, this was not reflected in the doctor's file. And the physician's department chief "was not aware of the negative prescription days but was 'not at all surprised' because there were current concerns about this physician," the report said.

Columbus, Russell County baseball teams invited to play in national tournamen

Two of the most successful local high school baseball programs will be on a national stage in late March.

Columbus and Russell County have both been invited to play in the first USA Baseball National High School Invitational. The four-day tournament will run March 28-31 at Cary, N.C.

?It is a honor for our program,? Columbus coach Bobby Howard said. ?Most of the honor goes to our previous teams, former players and former parents.?

The 16 teams in the field will play in a single-elimination format to decide a champion. However, each team is guaranteed four games, so after a loss teams will drop into a losers bracket.

Of the 16 teams in the field, 12 play for state championships (teams in New York and California do not). Those 12 teams have combined to win 36 state titles.

Columbus has won 10, including back-to-back titles in the past two seasons. Russell County won its Alabama championship in 2005, the same year in which it was named national champion by USA Today.

?We?re thrilled with the quality of teams that we were able to commit to this inaugural event,? USA Baseball Director of Development Rick Riccobono said in a blog on baseballamerica.com. ?The talent and history of the participants is truly consistent with the mission of the program: To bring together our nation?s most accomplished high school baseball teams in one championship tournament.?

The tournament will also showcase some of the top individual talent in the nation as well. Of Baseball America?s top 100 players who would be eligible for next June?s Major League Baseball draft, nine will play in the tournament.

?USA Baseball has always wanted more of a connection with that level of baseball,? said Nathan Rode, Baseball America?s assistant editor for high schools. ?They have try outs during the summer for national teams, but they wanted more of a connection with the high school level.?

Columbus, which had to move three games in its schedule to free up time for the tournament, is expected to make a run at its 11th state crown in 2012. The Blue Devils return three players who have already signed with Division I schools. Kyle Carter and J.T. Phillips have signed with Georgia, while Spencer Draws has signed with Air Force.

Russell County is also expected to be a contender for a state championship in 2012. The Warriors went 34-10 last season and advanced to the state semifinals. They will be led by pitchers Ray Castillo, who has committed to Alabama, and Jesse Nelson.

Russell County coach Tony Rasmus could not be reached.

Howard said Columbus will ride a bus to Cary the day before the tournament starts. He said parents raised the money to cover the cost of the trip. He said he did not know the cost of the trip.

The others teams in the tournament are Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.), Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.). Oxford (Ala.), Sarasota (Fla.), Orange (Calif.) Lutheran, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables, Fla.), Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Carroll (Corpus Christi, Texas), George Washington (New York), Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), Highlands Ranch High School (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Lee County (Sanford, N.C.)

Do Not Buy Dad a Tie

The indisputable fact is that cash is the most economically efficient gift. But cash is, in many cases, socially unacceptable, which means you need to pursue an alternative approach. Here your best bet is to show a taste for risk. The problem with presents is that you?re never going to do a better job of satisfying the gift-recipient?s preferences than she could do herself. But preference sets aren?t fixed. If someone had handed me $10, I never would have spent it buying the Cults album, for the simple reason that I hadn?t heard of the band. When it was given to me, I immediately checked it out and loved it. When you step outside the circle of things you know for sure your gift-getter likes, you risk creating a massive deadweight loss. (You give her a ticket to Las Vegas, without knowing that she hates gambling.) But with the greater risk comes a greater potential reward. You may introduce the recipient to something marvelous she would otherwise have never encountered. Giving stuff rather than cash is a way of saying you know better than the recipient what she really wants. The riskier the present, the more likely it is to generate significant benefit. (So, not a sweater.)

Writer Christopher Hitchens loses his battle with cancer

Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens died Thursday of pneumonia, a complication of the esophageal cancer he was diagnosed with in 2010. He was 62.

A prolific writer on everything from atheism to politics to the British royal family, Hitchens was known for his unflinching prose and often unpopular opinions which created a great deal of debate amongst his readers in Vanity Fair, where he had been a contributing editor since 1992.

"Christopher Hitchens was a wit, a charmer, and a troublemaker, and to those who knew him well, he was a gift from, dare I say it, God. He died today at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, after a punishing battle with esophageal cancer, the same disease that killed his father," confirmed Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

"There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar. Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

"To his friends, Christopher will be remembered for his elevated but inclusive humor and for a staggering, almost punishing memory that held up under the most liquid of late-night conditions. And to all of us, his readers, Christopher Hitchens will be remembered for the millions of words he left behind. They are his legacy. And, God love him, it was his will," Carter wrote.

Celebrity obituaries on SheKnows >>

Hitchens kept up his writing duties after his dire diagnosis, refusing to back down from his anti-religion stance even in the face of his own mortality.

"So far, I have decided to take whatever my disease can throw at me, and to stay combative even while taking the measure of my inevitable decline. I repeat, this is no more than what a healthy person has to do in slower motion," he wrote in his final column for Vanity Fair, which can be read in the January 2012 issue. "It is our common fate. In either case, though, one can dispense with facile maxims that don't live up to their apparent billing."

Christopher Hitchens is survived by his wife Carol Blue and three children, Alexander, Sophia and Antonia.

Epson PowerLite S9 Multimedia Projector

Epson promotes its PowerLite S9 Multimedia Projector ($499 direct) as a classroom projector, citing features such as built-in closed captioning, audio-out, and monitor-out. ?This projector provides decent image quality as well, and should be suitable for its intended role, as long as your classroom is not too large and you don?t require advanced features like interactivity. One thing for sure is that it provides good value for its price.

The PowerLite S9?s light source, based on the 3LCD technology developed by Epson, is rated at 2,500 lumens. The projector provides SVGA (800 by 600 pixel) native resolution, at a 4:3 aspect ratio suitable for data presentations. From a distance of about 7 feet away, the projector was able to fill our test screen with an image about 64 inches on a diagonal that stood up well to ambient light, which should be fine for smaller classrooms.

The S9 measures 3.0 by 11.6 by 9.0 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.1 pounds. The projector is white, with rounded corners that give it a sleek profile. There's a manual focus wheel accessible through an indentation above the lens; I was able to bring it to a reasonably sharp focus. It lacks an optical zoom, in favor of a 1.0 - 1.35 digital zoom.

The S9 has a modest selection of ports: VGA (which doubles as component video), monitor-out; audio-in and audio-out; S-video; a type B USB port; and a single yellow RCA jack for composite video. USB Plug ?n Play provides easy connectivity with both Macs and Windows PCs.

Still and Video Image Testing

In our DisplayMate (www.displaymate.com) testing, the PowerLite S9 proved adequate for typical data presentations. The projector showed good detail in data images, especially in dark areas. Text was reasonably sharp, even at the smallest size. Some light gray areas showed a slight yellowish tint, and bright areas sometimes showed a yellow fringe. Colors in general seemed on the pale side?they didn?t really pop.

I tested its video using selected scenes from Terminator 2 and The West Wing. Video quality was up to showing short clips, but I wouldn?t recommend it for longer clips, let alone movies. Though color was good, better than it was for still images, artifacts appeared often enough to be distracting. ?These included moving objects that sometimes had a hint of jagged edges, and some backgrounds that had a slightly hatched or textured look. If you use a lot of movie clips in your presentations, this probably isn?t the best projector for the job.

The Epson PowerLite S9 Multimedia Projector should fill the bill as a projector for typical classroom presentations at a fairly modest price. The Dell 1210S ?($449 list, 3.5 stars) and Optoma Pro160S ??($500 street, 3.5 stars) are both SVGA projectors comparable in features and performance to the S9, and are also worth checking out.

The NEC NP-M260W ?($850 street, 4 stars) provides many more connection choices, higher resolution and better image quality, at a higher price. ?If you need interactivity in your presentations, you?ll want to graduate to the likes of the Editors? Choice Optoma TW675UTi-3D ?($1,800 street, 4 stars) or Epson Brightlink 450wi ($2,200, 4 stars). But for basic classroom use, the Epson PowerLite S9 gets the job done, and the price is right.
